Every Tuesday when the grocery ads are dropped on my doorstep, I look through them all for fresh food to cook for the week and staples to stock up on. Most of these stores’ ads run Wednesday through Tuesday, but Meijer and Ultra Foods run Thursday through Wednedsay.
This isn’t necessarily a list of what I am going to buy, but the items that are good deals from a cook’s perspective. I’ll also throw in things that wouldn’t necessarily be part of a recipe but are wholesome and a good price. Here is what I see this week:
Caputo’s
- Nectarines, $.50/lb.
- Local cabbage, $.19/lb.
- Local celery, $.39/lb.
- Cantaloupe, $.99 each.
- 1 lb strawberries or pint blueberries, $1.50.
- Mangoes, $.50 each.
- Limes, 15/$1.00. Because you might want to make guacamole or a marinade.
- USDA Choice boneless strip steak family pack, $4.49/lb.
- Boneless skinless chicken breast family pack, $1.89/lb.
- Dutch Farms butter quarters, $1.99.
- Fratelli 10 oz locally roasted whole bean or ground coffee, $5.99. I am so excited to see this as I missed the last sale and have been interested in trying this coffee which is roasted just a couple of towns over from me.
Dominick’s
- Pantry essentials gallon milk, $1.78 limit 2.
- Lucerne 32 oz Greek yogurt, $2.99. The brand name large containers of Greek yogurt are SO expensive! On a most basic level, this is great as a snack with some fruit mixed in. It is also great for cooking, baking, as a healthier substitute for sour cream or mayo, as a base for dips, and many other things.
- Lucerne large eggs, $.99 with in-ad coupon limit 2. For scrambled eggs, or whatever you might be cooking, like macaroni & cheese, or if you feel up for making pasta.
- Mahatma 5 lb jasmine rice, $5.49 limit 2 with Just for U offer.
- Local kale or collard, turnip, or mustard greens, $.99/lb. Sauteed kale (or any of the other greens), of course.
Jewel
I really don’t see anything that stands out. Some of the prices are okay, but only if you are there already and to me, there isn’t anything to draw me in, even in theory, this week.
Meijer
- Red, green, or black seedless grapes, $.99/lb.
- Local zucchini or yellow squash, $.77/lb. Make ribbons.
- Local green beans, $.88/lb.
- Local roma tomatoes, $.79/lb. Because mine are still green!
- Local cucumbers or green onions, 3/$1.00.
- Earthbound Farm organic 2 lb carrots, $1.50 or bunch green onions, $1.25. Plus, you can print $1.00/2 here when you sign up (or wait until Tuesday, when it will probably become a $.75/1 again). There is also 5 oz Earthbound Farm salad at 3/$5.00.
- Boneless skinless chicken breast, $1.99/lb. Just an okay price, but not bad if you are in need. Also, I’ve been quite happy with the quality of meat from Meijer.
- Pork shoulder country ribs, $1.79/lb. It might be time for more slow cooker carnitas!
- Buy 7, save $7 sale, including 12 oz John Morrell bacon and Eckrich smoked sausage. The sausage is $1.49 after savings and the bacon is $1.89. The 6/30 Red Plum had a $.55/1 for Eckrich, which you can also print here. We don’t eat a ton of smoked sausage but it is really handy for quick dinners and I have a bunch of recipes involving it that I am planning to post. My buy price for it is a dollar, so this works. This bacon is good and, even considering the smaller package, is a decent price for bacon. My husband keeps telling me to put actual bacon on the kale….
Tony’s
- Red or green seedless grapes, $.99/lb.
- Mangos, $.50 each.
- Large cucumbers, 3/$1.00.
- Cabbage, $.19/lb.
- Kale or collard, mustard, or turnip greens, $.59/lb. Again, have some kale already.
- 3 lbs yellow onions, $1.50.
- Organic Packham pears, $.99/lb.
- Boneless skinless chicken breast jumbo pack, $1.69/lb. This is almost as low as I have seen it go and definitely the lowest I have seen for a while. I am totally out and thinking of making an Asian style chicken salad with this and the cheap cabbage, so it works for me.
- USDA Choice skirt steak, $3.99/lb. Mmm, carne asada.
- Assorted pork chops, $1.49/lb.
- Dutch Farms dozen large eggs, $.99 limit 2.
Ultra
- Boneless skinless chicken breast, $1.88/lb Friday and Saturday only.
- 1 lb strawberries, $.98. Friday and Saturday only.
- Whole seedless watermelon, $2.88 limit 2. It says average is 14-15 lbs!
- Peaches, nectarines, or plums, $.78/lb.
- Dutch Farms dozen large eggs, $.88. Friday and Saturday only.
- Dutch Farms cream cheese brick, $.78.
My plan
For some reason, I feel like I should buy boneless skinless chicken breast, hmm. Thursday morning, my daughter and I are leaving on a road trip to visit my family in Ontario, so I won’t be shopping until after we return early next week, when I will probably hit Tony’s and Meijer (they are very close to each other) for get chicken, sausage, bacon, and produce. I am loving how Meijer has so much local produce lately. But I do really want to try that coffee at Caputo’s, so I am not set on the plan. My husband will be here while we are away, but he suffers from learned helplessness when it comes to cooking. He plans to go out, grill steaks, eat leftovers, and engage in other stereotypically male behavior. My objective before we leave tomorrow is just to finish as much produce as we can to not let it go to waste. We’ll have these pork, corn and zucchini enchiladas for dinner again, which nobody minds at all because they are SO good. Otherwise there will mostly fruit left, some of which we will take on the road and some even the man will eat.
