Every Tuesday when the grocery ads are dropped on my doorstep, I look through them all for fresh food to cook for the week and staples to stock up on. Most of these stores’ ads run Wednesday through Tuesday, but Meijer and Ultra Foods run Thursday through Wednedsay.
This isn’t necessarily a list of what I am going to buy, but the items that are good deals from a cook’s perspective. I’ll also throw in things that wouldn’t necessarily be part of a recipe but are wholesome and a good price. Here is what I see this week:
Caputo’s
- Green seedless grapes, $.89/lb.
- Andy Boy rapini, $1.29/lb. This is a great price, and as I think I mentioned before, I like to make a pasta dish with this and Italian sausage. Conveniently enough, they also have a good price on sausage, so I will try to make it and share.
- Romaine lettuce, $.59/lb. My garden’s lettuce is done for now, so this will be helpful.
- 3 lb bag B size Yukon Gold potatoes, $.99. These are good, relatively small potatoes that are great mashed or roasted. Potatoes last a long time so it is always a good idea to pick them up at this price.
- Nectarines, $.69/lb.
- Prune plums, $.79/lb.
- Limes, 15/$1.00. I think this calls for me to share my fresh margarita recipe this week!
- Hot or mild Italian or bulk pork sausage, $1.69/lb. Great for so many things, like pasta with tomato vodka sauce and the rapini dish I plan to share soon.
- Chicken leg quarters, $.79/lb.
- Boneles center cut pork roast or chops family pack, $1.99/lb. I was so excited to see this! I am not always a fan of boneless pork but my husband has been requesting pork chops Milanese, so I will make them and share the recipe later in the week.
- Cod fillets, $5.49/lb. This is the best price I see on this. It is a great fish to fry, or for homemade fish sticks. Or for cakes, if you like torture.
- Wild caught Alaskan Coho salmon, $9.99/lb.
- Imported 20-22 month aged Soresina Parmigiano Reggiano, $10.99/lb. Great price! This is still expensive, but so worth it if you like to cook Italian food.
- Large eggs dozen, $.99.
- Dean’s quart half & half, $2.00.
- Valenzano 16 oz French bread, $.99 limit 4.
- La Bella Romana 9″ focaccia with tomatoes, $1.99. Yum!
- Red Gold 28 oz tomatoes, $1.00. Print $.50/2 here. Just an okay price, so no need to run and stock up, but great if you are in need.
Dominick’s
- Boneless skinless chicken breast, $1.99/lb.
- Local sweet corn, 4/$1.00.
- Local kale, mustard, collard, or turnip greens by the bunch, $.99 each. Sauteed kale is a healthy, versatile, easy side.
Jewel
- Boneless pork roast, $1.99/lb.
- Red seedless grapes, $.99/lb.
- Tomatoes on the vine, local vine ripe tomatoes, or local Roma tomatoes, $.99/lb.
- Wild caught Alaskan Coho salmon, $9.99/lb. Try it with a spice rub or in this light pasta dish.
- Local bunches cilantro, $.59.
- Local yellow squash or zucchini, $.99/lb. Another easy side: zucchini ribbons. Or try these awesome enchiladas!
- Local green beans, $.99/lb.
- Local sweet corn, $.40 each.
Meijer
- Local green beans, $.77/lb.
- Local vine ripe beefsteak tomatoes, $.79/lb.
- Local eggplant, $.69/lb.
- Center cut half boneless pork loin, $1.89/lb.
- Medium avocados, 3/$1.00. I haven’t made guacamole in a while, so these might just get me to the store.
- Limes, 12/$1.00.
Tony’s
- Mangos, $.39 each.
- Poblano peppers, jalapeños, or tomatillos, $.79/lb.
- Whole seedless watermelon, $1.99.
- Green onion bunches, 3/$1.00.
- Chicken drumsticks family pack, $.69/lb. For oven fried, broiled, fried, everyone wants a drumstick.
- USDA Choice skirt steak family pack, $3.99/lb. Carne asada, please.
- USDA Choice boneless short ribs family pack, $2.99/lb.
- Boneless pork chops family pack, $1.99/lb. Another option for my planned Milanese.
- Chicken thighs jumbo pack, $.99/lb.
- Extra large eggs dozen, $.99 limit 2.
- El Milagro 12 ct corn tortillas, $.25 each. These are great, local, and sometimes still warm when you buy them,
- Centrella 4 lb sugar, $1.49 limit 2.
- Dutch Farms cream cheese, $.99. Try my everything dip!
Ultra
- Green seedless grapes, $.78/lb.
- Local peaches, $.78/lb.
- Pork spare ribs, $1.88/lb.
- Frigo 16 oz mozzarella or 32 oz ricotta, $1.98. With the $.50/1 in the 6/2 RP, it’s a good price for either.
- Frigo 8.8-12 oz string cheese, $1.98. With the $.75/1 in the 6/2 or 7/28 SS, it becomes a good price for a convenient snack.
My plan
So far, I am planning to make pork Milanese and roasted tomato basil risotto with green beans on the side, a pasta dish with rapini and Italian sausage, and something involving guacamole and margaritas (possibly carne asada). I will probably end up just going to Caputo’s and Meijer. My garden is finally giving me red tomatoes, so I am excited to finally make and share my best friend’s roasted tomato basil risotto.
